While still a worthy watch, there once was a time when Groundhog Day was about the only time loop movie. While the time loop movies genre isn’t exactly overflowing now, there are definitely a lot more options than there used to be. All it took was a little . . . time.

It usually consists of a character reliving a day or experience over and over and over again and they usually have to complete some sort of task to escape the loop. Whether a comedy, romance, horror, thriller, or sci-fi, it’s clear that time loop plots can work in just about every genre.

15 Time Loop Movies To Watch On Groundhog Day

1. Happy Death Day (2017) and Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer’s identity.

Happy Death Day and its sequel blend horror and comedy in this addition to the time loop genre.

2. Before I Fall (2017)

February 12 is just another day in Sam’s charmed life until it turns out to be her last. Stuck reliving her last day over and over, Sam untangles the mystery around her death and discovers everything she’s losing.

3. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

A soldier (Tom Cruise) fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies.

4. Palm Springs (2020)

Stuck in a time loop, two wedding guests develop a budding romance while living the same day over and over again.

5. Source Code (2011)

A soldier wakes up in someone else’s body and discovers he’s part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train within 8 minutes.

Looper takes place in a sci-fi future where hired assassins have to travel back in time to kill their targets. At the end of their contracts, they have to kill their older selves.

When Joe (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is unable to kill his older self (played by Bruce Willis), it sets him on a dangerous path to stop his employers.

Run Lola Run is an action-packed time loop story about a woman stuck in a time loop and tasked with acquiring $100,000 to save her boyfriend’s life.

10. Two Distant Strangers (2020)

Netflix’s Oscar-winning short film stars Joey Badass as Carter James, a graphic designer who keeps trying to get back to his apartment, only to be repeatedly killed by a police officer.

11. The Butterfly Effect (2004)

The Butterfly Effect involves a man (Ashton Kutcher) who realizes he can travel back in time and inhabit his past self but must deal with the consequences – which are – unsurprisingly, very dramatic.

12. Mine Games (2012)

Mine Games sees a group of friends heading out to a cabin to spend their weekend celebrating college graduation.

The group enters a nearby mine and observes an Ouroboros (a snake eating its own tail) drawn on the mine walls. It’s not perfectly done, but the concept is pretty cool.

13. The Final Girls (2015)

Taissa Farmiga stars as a high school student who gets stuck in a 1980s horror movie and has to end it before the killer murders her, her friends, and the cast.

14. Triangle (2009)

Triangle sees a group of shipwrecked friends take refuge on a creepy old derelict cruise ship with a masked killer on board. It’s a unique take on the ghost ship subgenre.
